Dear Ms. Jones,
This is a letter of inquiry from the Waste Exchange Information Center (WEIC) in Taiwan. Could you provide us with legislation/strategy information regarding environmental protection in the areas of waste minimization, life cycle asessment, cleaner product technology, and polluter pays policies?
WEIC is a non-governmental, non-profit organization subsection of Union Chemical Laboratories (UCL). UCL is a subsidiary of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Hsinchu, Taiwan. We are currently involved with a long-term project entitled “Industrial Waste Minimization Information Service,” which has been sponsored by the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) for more than three years. The goal of this long-term project is to provide relevant information on industrial waste minimization procedures. Our major work includes the publication of a waste minimization bimonthly magazine, the facilitation of waste exchange/reuse, and the dissemination of commercialized waste minimization technologies. Experimental results generated from this project have already been most helpful in alleviating some of Taiwan’s waste management problems.
Rapid economic growth in Taiwan has annually brought on more than seven million tons of municipal waste and thirty million tons of industrial waste. Because such large quantities pose a threat to Taiwan’s people and environment, government, industry, research and technology organizations have begun to focus their attention on waste treatment sustainable product technology. Much effort has already gone into the research and implementation of life cycle assessment, cleaner product technologies, and ‘polluter pays’ policies.
We recognize that the continued success of our efforts will hinge on our willingness to share and exchange information with other, similar organizations. Enclosed please find an introductory document that provides insight into WEIC, Taiwan.
I hope you will be able to provide us with legislation/strategy information regarding envrionmental protection in the areas of waste minimization, life cycle assessment, cleaner product technology, and polluter pays policy.

工程計劃目標 Rainfall induced shallow type landslides in Taiwan can be investigated based on the theory of unsaturated soil mechanics. 達成目標的方法 To do so, capable of determining the shear strength of soil during dry and rainy seasons, the proposed method can estimate the safety factor of the slope under various conditions. The rainfall intensity and infiltration rate of the slope surface can then be simulated using SEEP/W. Next, the distribution of water pressure soil slope under various conditions can be determined via SEEP/W. Finally, results of SEEP/W can be used as an input to the SLOPE/W in order to determine the slope stability under various conditions. 希望的結果 As anticipated, based on the unsaturated soil theory, the proposed method can evaluate the failure mechanism and failure time of a natural soil slope. Additionally, the method can explain why the slope can maintain a sharp slope angle during the dry season. 領域的貢獻 Importantly, the proposed method can increase the accuracy of slope stability analyses.
